The traditional Onion Patch Series and the Onion Patch Navigators Race Series are organized by the New York Yacht Club (NYYC), the Cruising Club of America (CCA) and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC).

ONION PATCH SERIES

All yachts in the traditional Onion Patch Series will race as individual entries and are encouraged to form three-boat teams representing nations, yacht clubs, or other yachting associations to compete for the "Onion Patch Trophy".

The traditional Onion Patch Series consists of the following races:

  • All races of the New York Yacht Club 162nd Annual Regatta on Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12, 2016;
  • The Cruising Club of America and Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Newport Bermuda Race® starting on Friday, June 17, 2016;
  • All races of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Anniversary Regatta on Friday, June 24, 2016.

ALL RACES in the traditional Onion Patch Series that are sailed shall count. There is no throw-out race. A minimum of three races, which shall include the Newport Bermuda Race®, shall constitute a series.

ONION PATCH NAVIGATORS RACE SERIES
All yachts in the traditional Onion Patch Navigators Race Series will race as individual entries.

The Onion Patch Navigators Race Series consists of the following races:

  • The Navigators Race each day of the New York Yacht Club 162nd Annual Regatta on Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12, 2016;
  • The Cruising Club of America and Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Newport Bermuda Race® starting on Friday, June 17, 2016;
  • The Navigators Race of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Anniversary Regatta on Friday, June 24, 2016.

ALL RACES in the Onion Patch Navigators Series that are sailed shall count. There is no throw-out race. A minimum of three races, which shall include the Newport Bermuda Race®, shall constitute a series.

NOTICE OF SERIES

1 ELIGIBILITY

1.1 The traditional Onion Patch Series is open to individual yachts that qualify for entry in all the events that comprise the Onion Patch Series.

1.2 The Onion Patch Navigators Race Series is open to individual yachts holding a current Full Measurement ORR certificate that qualify for entry in all the events that comprise the Navigators Race Series.

2 TEAMS

Traditional Onion Patch teams may compete for the traditional Onion Patch Trophy. Teams representing nations, yacht clubs or other yachting associations shall consist of any three eligible registered yachts which are participating in the series and are registered as a team.

3 RULES

3.1 All traditional Onion Patch Series races shall be scored under the rating rule used for each individual event.

3.2 All Onion Patch Navigators Series races shall be scored under the ORR rating rule.

3.3 All races shall be sailed in accordance with The Racing Rules of Sailing, the Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions set out by the Organizing Authority for each individual event.

4 ENTRIES, CONDITIONS

4.1 Individual yacht and team entries for the Onion Patch Series shall be made online and submitted on or before Thursday, June 9, 2016.

4.2 There is an series entry fee of US$120.

4.3 Entry and payment of any fees for each of the individual events is governed by each NOR and shall be made separately.

5 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Please refer to the Onion Patch website and the individual regatta websites for each event's NOR and schedules.

6 SCORING

6.1 The official results of each event will be used to calculate the Onion Patch Series results.

6.2 Each yacht's individual final score in each event will be determined by her overall finish position within the traditional Onion Patch fleet or the Navigators Race fleet. The yacht's score for the traditional Onion Patch Series or the Onion Patch Navigators Race Series will be the sum of the weighted points of all three events.

6.3 Each individual yacht's score for the listed events will be weighted as follows: the finish position in the Newport Bermuda Race will be multiplied by 1.25; the finish position in the NYYC Annual Regatta will be multiplied by 1.00; and the finish position in the RBYC Anniversary Regatta will be multiplied by 1.00.

6.4 The yacht with the lowest score wins. Ties will be broken in favor of the yacht with the best finish position in the Newport Bermuda Race.

6.5 Team scores will be the sum of each yacht's individual qualifying scores as described in paragraph 6.3; the team with the lowest cumulative score will be declared the winner. Ties will be broken in favor of the team with best cumulative finish positions in the Bermuda Race. Any remaining tie will be broken in favor of the team with the yacht having the best finish position in the Bermuda Race amongst all yachts on the tied teams.

6.6 For all races of the Onion Patch Series completed on Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12, 2016, in the NYYC Annual Regatta, the scoring shall be based on a formula that divides the yacht's corrected time by the distance of the race she participated in, resulting in a corrected seconds per mile. The competitors will be ranked in order of the fastest (lowest) sec/mile to the slowest (largest) sec/mile for each race. POINTS will be awarded according to ranking, and these points will be used in the compilation of the overall scores in the series.

7 PRIZES

7.1 The Onion Patch Trophy will be awarded to the team having the lowest combined score in the traditional Onion Patch Series. Prizes will be awarded to each yacht on the winning team.

7.2 The Henry B. du Pont Trophy will be awarded to the lowest scoring individual yacht in the traditional Onion Patch Series.

7.3 The Catherine Hollis Memorial Trophy will be awarded to the yacht entered in the traditional Onion Patch Series that has the lowest corrected time in the Newport Bermuda Race, using ORR scoring with a common scratch boat.

7.4 The Richard "Dick" Kempe Trophy will be awarded to the lowest scoring individual yacht in the Onion Patch Navigators Race Series.

7.5 Onion Patch Series prizes will be awarded at Prize Giving for the Newport Bermuda Race on Saturday June 25.

8 LIABILITY

8.1 The organizers and sponsors bear no responsibility for accidents, damages or injuries to yachts or their personnel arising from any cause during the races or related activities. Attention is drawn to the RRS Fundamental Rules, to USSER 1.2 Overall: Responsibility, to the World Sailing Offshore Special Regulation 1.02, Responsibility of the Person in Charge, and to "Waiver and Release of Liability" as stated on the entry form(s) and any executed Waivers of Liability.

8.2 Competitors shall complete any Waivers of Liability required by the individual regattas.
